Abbott has announced the discontinuation of its popular FreeStyle Libre 2 and FreeStyle Libre 3 continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensors.
This transition will require patients to switch to the newer FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus or FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensors.
The new Plus sensors offer several key advantages, including an extended 15-day wear time. According to Sara Jones, Consulting Pharmacist for Northwest Human Services, "For new patients, I recommend prescribing FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensors with the corresponding FreeStyle Libre 3 reader moving forward, as these sensors allow for continuous transmission regardless of how frequently the patient scans the device. Of note these sensors are good for 15 days each."
340B and Pricing Information
The 340B price for the new FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus and FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensors is approximately $99. In comparison, a GoodRx coupon for the same sensors is around $150.
Supply Chain Alert
Please be aware that the FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensor is currently experiencing reported supply shortages. To ensure a smooth transition for your patients, we strongly recommend coordinating closely with your pharmacy on availability. To avoid any interruptions in care, please provide ample lead time for the pharmacy to place an order if needed.
